José Pedro Costigliolo (b. Montevideo, Uruguay, 1902, died 1985). From 1921 to 1925 studied at the "Circulo de Bellas Artes" with important teachers such as Vicente Puig and Guillermo Laborde. During his career he produced paintings in a variety of styles including Cubism, Purism, and Russian Suprematism, producing both figurative and non-figurative works. In 1952 Costigliolo founded, with his wife Maria Freire and Antonio Llorens, the Non-figurative Art Group, revolutionizing Uruguayan art together. Costigliolo was one of the most important artists of Moderism in Uruguay, and was considered a pioneer in this movement.
