GONZALO FONSECA
Born in Montevideo in 1922, he died in Italy, June 11, 1997.
Fonseca traveled frequently to Europe with his family...
impressed by visits to museums and archeological sites.
At 15, learned to sculpt in stone. In 1939, enrolled in the College of Architecture of Montevideo.
In 1942, abandoned his architectural studies and joined the Taller Torres-García.
In 1945, along with Jonio Montiel, Sergio de Castro and Julio Alpuy, traveled through
Argentina, Perú and Bolivia to study pre-Columbian art. In 1950, moved to Paris... Rome in 1951.
Traveled through Egypt, Sudan, Syria (worked in excavations directed by Petrie Flinters),
Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Greece. In 1953 in Madrid, studied ceramics at
the 'Rosedal - La Moncloa', met the Spanish sculptor Jorge de Oteiza.
In 1956, Montevideo and in 1958, moved to New York.
In 1970, began working in Italy, near Carrara, on large marble pieces.
In 1975, travelled to India, visited Ajanta Elora.
Fonseca lived and worked in New York and Seravezza, Italy.
He died in Italy, June 11, 1997.
