Our friend and gallery artist Julio Alpuy died Sunday April 5, 2009 in New York City, at the age of 90.
A founding member of the Taller Torres-García, Alpuy lived a full and active life. His early Constructivist compositions, his wonderful travel diaries, his seminal works, the carved incised wood reliefs from the 1960s, and the drawings and engravings that followed comprise a significant body of work.
“The confluence between originative forms and a creative style linked to craftsmanship make the 1960s a fascinating moment in the work of Alpuy who, like a demigod, creates a new world on the basis of the complex experiences of more than forty years, assuming the role of the maker literally, emotionally and poetically.”
