MATIAS KRAHN
Born in 1972, Santiago, Chile
He moved to Barcelona, Spain and attended the University of
Barcelona (1990-95), with a year spent in England studying at the Winchester School
of Art. Krahn has developed a unique style of painting with paper,
using very small bits of hand-cut paper as an integral part of his
pen and watercolor line drawings as well as the collages he has
created of interiors, still lifes, portraits, and landscapes. These
works are created within a frame that Krahn makes from discarded old
doors, window frames, shutters and the like. His frames serve as
theatrical stages for the presentation of his work. Starting with the
background, Krahn builds up the surface, layer by layer with bits of
paper as the idea/subject for the composition forms. Often the idea is
accompanied by the recollection of a phrase, poetic, rustic, or
literary, with the allusion giving title to the work. Still a young
man, Krahn has already established a following of admirers and
collectors who value the individuality of his vision and the singularity
of his technique.
